A Chaotic Run

Rehashed Run No: 1616; Hares: Danabalan, Lynn Holland, Gerard Probst; Date: 13th December, 2005; Venue: Lendu.

Lendu is a popular hashing run-site in Malacca. It is tucked away in the outskirt some 30 km north of Malacca city. Its terrain is hilly and scenic covered with oil palm, rubber and fruit plantations with fresh air which are ideal for hashing. Coupled with the popularity of the hare Danabalan who is the ex GM, a big turnout for the run was expected.

It was a cool and cloudy afternoon after a heavy morning downpour. Looking forward anxiously for a good run to shed some sweat, my partner and I arrived at the run-site which is a short distance in front of the Lendu Satellite Station at 5.00 pm. To our surprise, there were already a few cars there with not a single soul around. Their owners are none other than Danabalan, Bombastic, Gerard, Vijai, Pramjit Singh, Wild Boar Nara and Dr. Pandirajah. The hares Danabalan and Gerard must have gone in early to lay paper whereas the rest might have gone in early either as co-hares or early birds.

Anxious to catch up with them and armed with a small torch light, my partner and I followed the paper on a laterite road on the left at 5.10 pm. A short distance away, it turned into a path on the right, uphill into a young oil palm plantation, across 2 dry drains and downhill into a rubber plantation before hitting the first check after 25 minutes. It was a simple check.

The connecting paper was found a short distance away on the left in a young oil palm plantation. It continued to trudge on through the hilly terrain for another 30 minutes before hitting the second and last check at a cross junction in the rubber plantation on a hill.

It was there that we heard the dog barks and the shouts of ‘Are you?’ and ‘Checking!’ coming from the left and front. Minutes later we met Pramjit Singh and partner Inderjit Kaur who said that they were still in the process of finding the connecting paper. I then headed downhill on a laterite road on the right to look for the paper leaving my partner behind with them.

About 150 meters away, I made a U-turn after hearing them shouting ‘On! On!’ However, on arriving back I could neither see them and the connecting paper nor hear their voice. From then on, I was on my own running round in circle uphill, downhill, through the bush and drain and being chased by a barking dog near a farm house for the next 45 minutes.

It was at about 6.40 pm that I managed to meet energetic Dennis who was shouting ‘Are you?’ near the second check. I then led him into the bushy rubber plantation on the right where we heard the honking from sweeper Bui and joined the pack on the home trail in the oil palm plantation a short distance away. Apparently they found the connecting paper of the second check a far distance away in the north. Among the 10 odd hashers in the pack were Dr. Dave, Oil Rig Lim, Holly, Helen, Chee, Peter Loi, Mrs. Dennis, Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Tan and a few Mat Salleh guests. From then on, it was a strenuous 3-km uphill and downhill jog across 2 ditches and some barb-wire fences in the oil palm plantation before arriving back at the run-site at 7.20 pm where the hare Danabalan, co-hare Bombastic, front runners Tan Yan Lye, Vijai, my partner, a few non-runners and the beer wagon were waiting.

For our untiring efforts, each of us was given a beautiful T-shirt by the hares. The last runners, namely Pramjit Singh and partner, hare Gerard, Ngoh Kim Siah and Wild Boar Nara were back at around 9.00 pm after being picked up by Au Kiat, the kind soul, with his 4-wheel drive 5 km away led by a local resident on motor-cycle. They were said to have strayed and lost their way.

It was a moonlit night. Hash circle was conducted jointly by GM Garfield and Danabalan. It was well attended. As usual, the hare, co-hare, a few sinners and Mat Salleh guests were put on ice and on-downed. Ever-industrious Websitekang, who was missing from the last few runs, was seen busily taking their photos for obvious purpose of posting them in the MH3 website. So look out for them, guys! The circle ended at 8.30 pm when most hashers left for the on-on and a few others were left behind waiting for the return of the lost souls.

On-On was held at the popular Seafarer Restaurant, Batang Tiga. For the first time it was held on a boat decorated with a lighted Christmas tree facing the Strait of Malacca. A total of 5 tables were fully occupied. Delicious 6-course Nyonya food was served at 9.30 pm after the arrival of the 5 lost souls. As usual, the hares and a big number of sinners, including Mike The FBI, were on-downed. It was only at 11.15 pm that the crowd began to disperse with full tummy and smiling face. The food was good. It was on the hares. A big thank to the hares for the good run, good food, good time, good fellowship and beautiful T-shirt. On! On!
