A Memorable Committee Run

Rehashed Run No: 1630; Date: 21st March, 2006; Occasion: Torchlight Committee Run; Hares: Chinnatambi/Kiasu Lee; Runsite: Cheng Baru

A committee run is organised once a year. It is usually set by the mismanagement committee which starts at 6.00 pm. However, it was different for this year. The run was set to start at night with the use of torchlight. It is certainly unique and fun.

It has been years since I last ran a torchlight run. Anxious to feel the change, my partner and I arrived at the unfamiliar runsite which is situated behind the Cheng Baru town at 6.30 pm. The hares were already back from laying the paper. Among the early birds there were Simon, Maureen, Sharpshooter Robert and Joseph Botak. More runners trickled in as time passed by. They included Debbie, Dr. Tan, Dennis The Menace, Carol, Oil Rig Lim, Janet, Govind, Au Kait, Chee, Pramjeet and partner. They were each armed with a powerful torchlight.

It was at 7.30 pm when the sky began to turn dark. Before the run started, GM Chinnatambi told us that it was a simple and short 25-minute run and advised us to follow the paper.

The paper started from the housing estate into the nearby Christian cemetery where our ardent member, Vincent Wong who passed away peacefully on 10th March, 2006, was buried. Understandably, all of us felt sad to lose him. From there it continued to go uphill for the next 15 minutes through narrow path among the graves and bushes until it arrived at the top. It was a tough and tiring climb which required us to show our hashing spirit by pulling and pushing up each other that led to most of us sweating profusely and panting. However, the beautiful night view of the lighted nearby Krubong Industrial Estate had offered us some relief and quickened our recovery.

The downhill trail was on a laterite road. It hit the first and only check a short distance away. It was a simple check. The connecting paper was on the right among the oil palm trees. The descent on the steep and bushy path was difficult. It lasted for some 200 meters which again required our mutual assistance before arriving at another Chinese cemetery. From then on it was another tough and tiring climb on a laterite road until we reached the top of another hill overlooking Cheng Baru town where the night scenery with lights was fantastic.

It was at around 8.00 pm when we started our descent. The sky then was pitch dark. However, with torchlight in hand we found no difficulties in following the paper. On the way, each runner was given a beautiful T-shirt by the committee. After passing by a few farm houses and a small rubber holding along a lighted tar road, we had finally arrived back at the runsite at 8.20 pm.

It was a short but tough, unique and memorable run. The last runners namely, Sharpshooter Robert, Govind, Janet and Marion were back at 9.00 pm after getting lost at the check and made a reverse.

Hash circle was conducted by the GM. Several sinners including a guest, Hardy Boy from the Mother Hash, were put on ice and on-downed. The latter was promoting the impending Interhash 2008 which the Joint Kuala Lumpur Hashing Chapters are bidding. So do not forget to give your full support, fellow hashers!

On-on was held at a new Chinese restaurant at the nearby Cheng Perdana. It was well-attended with 4 tables. A delicious six-course Chinese dinner was served with free-flowing beer. It was then that we saw the sudden appearance of Ex GM Vibrator. His busy business schedules must have prevented him from attending the run. As such, he was on-downed together with a few other sinners.

It was a memorable run and night. The pack had only started to disperse at 10.30 pm.
