Hashing Mishap(1)

The report is written here for your reading pleasure.

Fact: Based on the news published in China Press and Nanyang Siang Pau on 20th September,2003.

A group of Seremban HHH hashers was lost for 16 hours in their routine hash run on 19th September 2003.
The incident happened at Sungai Teri forest reserve area, Jalan Pantai in Seremban, 60 km from the city of Melaka.
As usual, a pack of 63 hashers from Seremban HHH entered the forest at 6.00 pm on the 19th September. The group followed the suggestion of the hare to proceed on a new trail, though there was no more sign of papers. Twenty three of them felt something was wrong after one hour of running and turned back folllowing the original trail, however, the forty of them followed the hare who was persistent to proceed further in order to complete the trail. At seven something, the first batch of 23 hashers managed to come out and waited at the run site until at 10 something and still could not see any sign of the second batch of hashers coming out. Sensing that something could go wrong, the club reported to the police for help. The police sent 15 men to assist. They went back to the trail with three hashers going together.

They searched the area until 1.00am in the morning and could not find a soul. The police dispersed off and came back next morning at 7.00am to re-enter the forest. After one and half hour of intensive search, the rescue team managed to find the lost souls at a spot at 10 km from the entry point. The hare whose name is Gila Siong ( Gila in English means madness ) was screwed upside down by the rest because of his persistence. Actually, the hash name already said it all. According to the lost hashers, in actual fact, forty of them were separated to two teams, 26 and 14 respectively, but luckily they were re-united again at the same spot at the eleven hour. They said they decided to set up camp fire after midnight since finding way out was remote.

The first lost hasher managed to come out at 8.30am next morning and the last one 11.00am. Dr Chen Ban Hin, ex DAP chief, a prominent figure in the hashing community was sharp enough to retreat at the first instance when he sensed something could go astray.Any way, the important thing is that no one got hurt and this is one of those things that could happen in hashing, thanks to modern technology, the mobile phone was in use and that kept the worry to a minimum!

Post Mortem comment: Perhaps, in a new area like that, sufficient recce should be done by the hare prior to setting the trail, and if necessary, hire a local guide like Orang Asli to assist.

Any way, glad to know that nothing serious happened, and to members of Seremban HHH, best wishes from the members of the Malacca Hash House Harriers!

On! On! Happy Hashing!
